I did a talk recently, for the Mother's Union...
The main question was 'What is Reflexology good for?' A good question, and to know the answer to this, one needs to know how it works...
Pressure is applied in a very gentle technique using the thumb, to reflexes (or nerve endings) found in the feet or hands. When the pressure technique is applied, it allows this flow of energy to pass through the body, freeing any blockages that may have occured due to illness or injury, and hence recreating energy balance. It is thus effective in detoxifying, as well as, amongst many things, boosting the immune system. In this way, the treatment works systemically, that is on all the body's systems, thus treating them all as a unit. Many conditions and ailments can therefore be treated through Reflexology.
A small example of conditions that Reflexology can treat, include:
Headaches / Migraines Eczema Constipation / Intestinal problems such as Diverticulitis Allergies
Pregnancy related Issues Sciatica Back pain Stress Insomia Growing Pains Asthma
Hormonal Imbalances Thyroid problems Circulatory problems Menstrual issues & much more....!

Reflexology to aid onset of Labour
Reflexology is a good way of helping aid the onset of labour.
Essentially, it is like a 'natural induction'.
Having a treatment of this kind, there is no danger of causing complications, and in fact, it is most likely to reduce them. For example it can be very relaxing for both the baby and the mother, as well as enhance the recovery after birth. Labour can be slightly quicker, which makes it often seem a good option to try, and the Reflexology can also help reduce pain and anxiety that may be felt before, during or after the birth. The baby will only come when he or she is in fact ready to come, and therefore you will not induce a premature labour.
The treatment is designed to encourage and enhance the onset of labour in a chemical-free way. The Reflexology works to help start the contractions, encourage the baby downwards, prepare the large intestine (for elimination purposes), and prepare the pelvic muscles. It also attempts to stimulate the oxytocin hormone (which would be given through a drip if having a hospital induction).
This form of treatment only works when the baby is ready to come. If the baby isn't ready, it won't come.
This form of treatment is only done when the mother is full-term, and also providing she has had a fairly trouble free pregnancy.

Reflexology & Allergies
So many of us suffer from allergies. Whether it is food allergies or intolerances, hayfever, dust allergies, nut allergies, or numerous other forms of allergy, it is a very common experience.
Allergy is simply the response of the immune system to any form of stimuli, such as any of the above. Therefore, through Reflexology, you will probably find the immune system is slightly out of balance, resulting in a hyper-sensitive response to a given stimuli.
Whilst you have to be extremely careful when it comes to allergies not to exacerbate the reaction further, it is important to try and help reduce the effect.
Through Reflexology, it may be that you cannot change the fact that the allergy is there, but you may be able to vastly reduce the consequences of the reaction. It is not a cure, but people find that allergies can stay away for very long periods until the system becomes slightly out of balance again, in which case, a maintenance or top-up treatment can get it re-balanced once more!
It is important in case of severe reactions where the sufferer carries an EpiPen, that they continue to do this.
Skin allergies in particular, as well as hayfever, respond extremely well to Reflexology, where work takes place particularly within the adrenal gland reflex, which is responsible for allergy, as well as the immune system.
People come, having had long miserable summers suffering from hayfever, only to find that it has 'disappeared' after a course of Reflexology!

Reflexology for Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)
An embarrassing problem, excessive sweating is something most of us would dread. But some people suffer from a condition called Hyperhidrosis, whereby excessive sweating occurs as an automatic response to heat or other stimuli. (for example an emotional shock...)
It is understood to be a problem caused by dysfunction of the sympathetic nervous system, part of the autonomic nervous system.
Hyperhidrosis responds well to Reflexology due to it being an imbalance within the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamus which controls the sweat glands in the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet and the axilla (underarm / armpit region).
The Reflexology works to re-balance this, and get it coordinating within the body as a whole, neutralizing the energy flow.
The condition, which can cause great misery, when treated through Reflexology, shows vast differences within a surprisingly short space of time.

Reflexology & Depression
Depression is something that most of us endure at some stage in our lives.
Whether it is a short term thing, such as Seasonal Affective Disorder, or something rather more prolonged, it is something that is hopefully becoming less taboo - something we are not ashamed of.
Depression is usually caused by a chemical imbalance of the brain, and this is something that
'anti-depressants' for example, would counteract.
Reflexology has the same effect. Yet it is natural, and not only that, it works on the whole being, giving the client more energy and zest in a drug-free way.
Sometimes, the depression could be caused by, say, for example, a physical injury that causes great pain. The injury could thus be treated through Reflexology, at the same time as treating the depression, and the client leaves as a different person - feeling bright and pain free!!

Reflexology & the Menopause
The menopause is often a dreaded experience that most women have to go through eventually.
One of the most common symptoms is hot flushes, which can be extremely miserable, inconvenient and unpleasant.
Yet it is one of the symptoms that I have found to respond incredibly quickly (sometimes in as little as two sessions!) to Reflexology.
Reflexology works to re-balance energy flow that is not working evenly within that system area. Some areas of the body end up with too much energy flow going through - others have too little.
In circumstances of hot flushes, there is an overflow of hormones, in which case, the Reflexology is done in a way that will reduce that flow, working effectively to 'de-stimulate' the flow.
It is remarkably successful.
